Shabbat and Holiday Programs for Seniors
Shabbat Programs for Seniors
Lead a Shabbat program once or twice a month at a senior residential facility or rehabilitation site for 30 to 45 minutes. There are locations on the Peninsula, in San Francisco, and Marin which have Jewish residents who enjoy connecting with their Judaism through the joy and spirit of Shabbat. Volunteers do not need to be experienced or even proficient service leaders. Training is provided by the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center.
Programs for a particular residential site are designed by the Shabbat Volunteer in consultation with our Shabbat Volunteer Coordinator, and may include a few select prayers in English or Hebrew, songs, discussion, or arts and crafts projects. Most volunteers conduct programs on Friday during the mid or late afternoon or early evening, but times tend to be flexible and are coordinated with the facility’s schedule. Holiday Programs for Seniors
Lead a program for Hanukkah, Passover, or the High Holidays for Jewish residents at a senior facility or adult daycare. Programs are usually 30 minutes to an hour in length and may include a discussion of the holiday’s meaning, the recitation of some relevant prayers or blessings, and maybe some song. The programs are usually designed around the volunteer’s interests and strengths. Sites looking for volunteers are located on the Peninsula, in San Francisco, and in Marin. No prior experience is required. Contact Rabbi Jon Sommer if you are interested in volunteering for this program: 415.750.4198, or email email@example.com.
